If you haven’t already guessed it, this is a Harry Potter post! The craze and fan-following for the Harry Potter books is huge. The first movie premiered in 2001, but original fans have been casting spells since the first book came out in 1997. Recently, we had Harry Potter cast a spell here at Stevenson Ridge!

We had the pleasure of hosting a Harry Potter-themed wedding, and it did not disappoint. Even during their first meeting with us, Elyssa and Nialls made sure we knew how special this wedding was going to be for them, including special Harry Potter colors and décor.

The coordinators have been hyping up this wedding for the weeks leading up to it, and on October 21st, the Harry Potter wedding came to life!

When you walked into the Riddick House basement, a welcome table greeted guests with an adorable Monopoly board for their guestbook, wands for guests to take some magic home, and an antique suitcase for guest’s cards. The bride and groom also displayed their acceptance letters into Hogwarts School of Wizardy and Witchcraft.

Inside the main basement area, guests felt like they were walking into Hogwarts’ Great Hall. Candles hung from the track lighting, as did flying keys. The tables had napkins to match Hogwarts’ different houses. Centerpieces consisted of antique books with florals and greenery with subtle touches from the series (snitch, Harry’s glasses, an owl, the flying car, etc). Over by the brick wall, Platform 9 ¾ served as the perfect photo booth opportunity. And off to the side, guests could treat themselves at Honeydukes candy store with chocolate covered frogs (don’t worry, not real frogs), rock candy, jellybeans, and house-colored macaroons.

The guests and staff were in awe at all the little details this bride put into her wedding day. It will definitely be one we’ll never forget, and one we’ll probably share with future Harry Potter couples.

In mid-July, we hosted a very special Sweet 16 for a local Spotsylvania girl who choose a tea-party theme. It was wonderful working with her parents and making this birthday party exactly what she wanted. We came up with these fun ideas:

Lemonade and Iced Tea Station
It was July, so of course, hot tea wasn’t ever something we even discussed. Guests were able to pick their chose of beverage and then have variety of ways to dress it up with herbs, nectars, and fruits.

Butterfly Layered Tea
This was a great Pinterest find, and we’re so glad we were able to make it come to life for her party. It’s just lemonade and butterfly pea flower tea, but it’s all about the layering. This birthday party had a bartender to help serve this drink and make sure it got the look she was looking for. Once the guests received the drink, they stirred together the lemonade and tea to give it a magical color change.

Bubble Tea
This style tea is gaining in popularity in more cities such as Richmond with Bubble Bars, but we felt this would be appropriate for a tea party! Bubble tea is flavored tea with milk, with tapioca pearls added to give it a bubbly look. Other places can offer a smoothie bubble tea, but we stuck with the basic. I think quickly everyone’s favorite choice of bubble tea was Thai tea with milk because it had a fun orange color to it.

Tea Time DIYThe birthday girl and parents provided beautiful centerpieces with antique books, tea pots and cups, pearls, and flowers. The birthday girl is an aspiring artist and designed these large, beautiful flowers made out of paper to display behind her gift table. This event also had her cake and tea-themed desserts provided by The Icing from North Stafford. This birthday party was a success and we’re interested in seeing what her wedding day will eventually look like!

I have to say, I’m obsessed! My sister in-law purchased her Cricut a couple months ago, and it has been exciting and dangerous with all the crafts and personalizing we can do! I think over the last couple of months, we have cut vinyl for 15 wine glasses, 4 water bottles, 2 onesies, and 1 bathing suit for a bachelorette party in Miami, plus we’ve personalized a mail organizer and a jewelry box. My most recent project has been a surprise birthday present with cornhole boards. I’ll blog about that once it’s done and he’s received it.

So yes, it’s safe to say, we’re obsessed with this machine!

We can take the most boring, plain item and make it into something more personalized. We’ve even talked about opening an Etsy shop, but that’s down the road.

The Cricut is a wonderful machine that cuts, prints, and write whatever your heart desires. It doesn’t just cut vinyl, either—you can use other products such as cardstock, iron-ons, fabric, poster board, and regular paper. It has an online software you use to make your designs and, of course, there are always YouTube videos to help if you’re not sure about something. Yes, it can get a little expensive, but once you buy the machine and some inventory of materials, it’s really not that bad. We have more than 20 different-colored vinyls and haven’t gone through entire roll yet. If you’re crafty or love DIY like us, then this is definitely worth the money!

The faire is open on Saturday, April 1, from 10-6 p.m. and Sunday, April 2, from 11-4pm. Tickets in advance are $7 or at the door are $8.

We actually made a paper-heart garland for a backdrop we’ll be using at our Bridal Open House on Sunday, February 26th. We thought this inexpensive project would be great for engagement parties, bridal showers, and even your wedding day.

Here’s how we made our paper heart garland:

Step 1: The MOST time-consuming step ever! I used a ruler and lined my paper, but if you feel comfortable without lines you can skip this. You’ll need to cut your paper length-wise into strips. I used about 8-10 sheets of paper.

Step 2: You’ll need to pick your “stem.” I stuck with solid-colored paper because it has color on both sides, whereas printed paper only has a pattern on one side. Then choose two strips of different paper and line them up with the stem (remember, some of the pieces will be backwards until we shape the strips into the heart). With the strips of paper lined up against the stem, staple the bottom ends of your strips of paper to the stem.

Step 3: Bend the free ends of your two strips of paper downward. As you do, they’ll bow into a heart shape—and this is where you can get creative. Strips of different lengths create different sizes and shapes, so have fun with this part. Whenever you’re happy with the look of your heart, staple the free ends of your strips of paper to the stem. (I cut the extra paper on the bottom so it didn’t have a tail.) This gives you the first half of your heart.

Step 4: Repeat on the opposite side of the stem so your hearts have a second half.

Step 5: Once you have a nice collection of hearts, then start stapling the stems to the bottom of other hearts to make your chain. Play with different sizes and colors.

My friends didn’t have to look too far when they were deciding where and when to throw a baby shower for me. My husband and I are expecting a little boy in mid-March, so my friends and family decided on the last weekend of January in the Riddick House as the perfect time and place. Elizabeth and Bettina worked with one of my best friends from high school and with my mother to throw a wonderful shower.

Lemonade Moments made invitations that reflected the forest woodlands theme. Bettina made some beautiful centerpieces. Simply Sweet baked a delicious mini cake. Just Bee Custom Cookies made the favors, and Devine Signs did the guest book. We had a s’mores bar, and Chef Brad made some delicious treats.

Here are some scenes from the shower, which will hopefully let you celebrate with us a little. I hope it also offers a little inspiration for anyone else who might be planning a baby shower. (I can personally attest: The Riddick House is a great spot!)

Try this craft activity with the kids this winter. It’s perfect for a snow day to keep them busy!

This simple recipe, which comes from Growing a Jeweled Rose, makes your snow paint look like REAL snow.

You’ll need:

  • Shaving cream
  • White school glue
  • Peppermint extract
  • Iridescent glitter or buffalo snow

You will want to begin by popping your shaving cream and glue—separately—in the refrigerator. Leave it there overnight, and then make the paint the next morning. We left our glue out on the counter for about ten minutes just to get it flowing before we made our paint.

Next, mix equal parts of the chilled glue and shaving cream in a bowl. This is a rough estimate, so always free-pour. Sprinkle in glitter or buffalo snow. Use as much glitter as you prefer (so go glitter crazy if you want or just keep it minimal). Add a few drops of peppermint extract and mix.  Then, finish the paint off with more glitter.

When the paint is to your liking, start making your own designs with the snow paint. Have some craft paper on hand to add features to your creations to make them come alive.

Are you finding it hard to come up with a gift for a co-worker or friend? Do you need a last minute gift idea that doesn’t scream “I couldn’t think of anything, so this is all I could come up with!” Here are a few ideas for you:

  • “Create your own snowman” Box: Gather together items like rocks ( about 11 or 12, enough for the eyes, mouth, and buttons), a scarf, a hat, two sticks, and a carrot (or something orange resembling a carrot) and put all items into a basket or box
  • Ornament: The great thing about ornaments is it is used every year. My children and I love opening up the box (okay, let’s be real, boxes) of ornaments and remembering who gave us what. You will always be thought of, especially if the year is written on the ornament.
  • Blanket and a book: A traditional classic, like Twas The Night Before Christmas by Clemente C. Moore (found on Amazon with 2 day shipping), or A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens (found at Barnes and Nobles), are great gift ideas paired with a blanket and you cannot go wrong!
  • Craft Set for those friends with children (or not, everyone loves a craft!): for example a create-your-own bird house (found here at Hobby Lobby), a Make Your Own Hot Sauce Kit (found here), or even a coloring book with a box of colored pencils
