We are pleased to announce a few details about next year’s Seventh Annual Emerging Civil War Symposium at Stevenson Ridge. We posted some pictures from this year’s event here, and Emerging Civil War posted some additional pictures here, so if you want to see what a good time we had, check them out!

Next year, we’ll hold the Symposium on the first full week of August: August 7-9, 2020.

Our theme will be “Fallen Leaders.”

Our keynote speaker will be Gordon Rhea, author of a monumental five-part series on the 1864 Overland Campaign. Gordon will speak on the mortal wounding of Confederate cavalryman Jeb Stuart at the Battle of Yellow Tavern and its impact on the Army of Northern Virginia for the rest of the war.

On Sunday, historian Greg Mertz will give a tour of the Wilderness with a focus on the wounding of Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet by his own men while executing a flank attack against Federal forces.

We’ll announce our full line-up of speakers later this fall.

Early bird tickets are now on sale for $155 each. That price is good until Dec. 31. After that, you’ll be able to buy tickets at the regular price of $175 each.

We had a super successful Sixth Annual Emerging Civil War Symposium at Stevenson Ridge last weekend. We’ll be announcing details for next year’s Symposium next week, so stayed tuned! In the meantime, here’s a look at some of the fun we had this year:

We had a sell-out crowd. Tickets sold out in early June this year.
C-SPAN once more covered the event. Segments will begin airing in mid-September.
Our used book sale is always popular.
ECW authors had their books for sale, too.
The Central Virginia Battlefields Trust (cvbt.org) spread the news about its local preservation work.
On Friday evening, we had concurrent sessions in the Lodge and, here, in the Riddick House (where the ECW Symposium started six years ago).
Historians John Coski and Will Greene. Coski was the recipient of the Emerging Civil War Award for Service in Civil War Public History; Greene was the recipient of the ECW Book Award for “A Campaign of Giants: The Battle for Petersburg.”
Bourbon chicken and herb-rubbed pork loin with apricot gastrique topped the Saturday lunch menu.
Good eats!
I batted clean-up on Saturday–the last of twelve speakers for the weekend.
On Sunday, ECW’s Bert Dunkerly, a historian with the NPS, led a tour along the banks of the North Anna River.

I always love the sense of possibility I feel when I walk into the Lodge and the room is arranged and the table linens are set for an event. Anything could happen. The event decorations have yet to appear, and people have yet to fill the room–both, in their ways, will transform the space. Right now, though, the room is a fresh, clean slate, waiting to become something special for someone. That in itself makes the room special. A sense of expectation and anticipation hangs in the air.

In mid-July, we hosted a very special Sweet 16 for a local Spotsylvania girl who choose a tea-party theme. It was wonderful working with her parents and making this birthday party exactly what she wanted. We came up with these fun ideas:

Lemonade and Iced Tea Station
It was July, so of course, hot tea wasn’t ever something we even discussed. Guests were able to pick their chose of beverage and then have variety of ways to dress it up with herbs, nectars, and fruits.

Butterfly Layered Tea
This was a great Pinterest find, and we’re so glad we were able to make it come to life for her party. It’s just lemonade and butterfly pea flower tea, but it’s all about the layering. This birthday party had a bartender to help serve this drink and make sure it got the look she was looking for. Once the guests received the drink, they stirred together the lemonade and tea to give it a magical color change.

Bubble Tea
This style tea is gaining in popularity in more cities such as Richmond with Bubble Bars, but we felt this would be appropriate for a tea party! Bubble tea is flavored tea with milk, with tapioca pearls added to give it a bubbly look. Other places can offer a smoothie bubble tea, but we stuck with the basic. I think quickly everyone’s favorite choice of bubble tea was Thai tea with milk because it had a fun orange color to it.

Tea Time DIYThe birthday girl and parents provided beautiful centerpieces with antique books, tea pots and cups, pearls, and flowers. The birthday girl is an aspiring artist and designed these large, beautiful flowers made out of paper to display behind her gift table. This event also had her cake and tea-themed desserts provided by The Icing from North Stafford. This birthday party was a success and we’re interested in seeing what her wedding day will eventually look like!

During the Summer of 2017, I was given the opportunity to be an intern for Stevenson Ridge. Here I learned about the various aspects and procedures that go into event planning and coordination. Here I was able to be a part of and assist in an array of events such as weddings, corporate events, birthday parties, wedding rehearsals, wine tasting and menu tastings.

Stevenson Ridge was exactly what I was looking for my internship experience. I was able to learn about the event industry and how many details go into bringing together one event. I learned about vendor relationships and how crucial it is to have communication between guests, brides and grooms, and vendors for this business.

I was taught how to properly set up tables, what sizes work the best for certain events and what accessories are popular for weddings. While that may not be a major part of what I did here, it was all a part of the learning experience, and I feel better as a future wedding coordinator knowing what I do now.

As a student, I feel that I was able to get my foot in the door with event coordination and understand how this job works better and what work is put into it. I cannot thank the staff here enough for their kindness and support during this time. I was able to shadow three different coordinators, and each one taught me something different that I will keep with me in my future endeavors.

I had a great time here—thank you Stevenson Ridge!

The engagement party should happen within a couple of months of the proposal. The Knot calls it the sweet spot where it’s the carefree, just-engaged life and start of wedding planning.
Where to have it?
When considering the venue, think about the vibe you want to create. If you want something more elegant then you might want to rent out a private room. For something more low-key, maybe someone’s house, backyard or a favorite restaurant would be a better choice. Of course, we’re partial to the Riddick House! We’ve even hosted small, intimate events on the front porch of the Log Home.
Whom to invite?
Traditionally, you are suppose to invite only people invited to the wedding, but now engagement parties include people who aren’t invited to the weddings. The formality of engagement parties is evolving due to living far away from family and friends so expectations have changed.
What to wear?
The bride’s outfit will depend on the setting of the party, but keep it simple enough that you don’t outdo your wedding look. For the groom, save the tux or suit for the wedding, but you should match your partner in formality. And if you have a dress code for the party, make sure to address it on the invitation.
