Hosting an American Hero for Medal of Honor Day

Last October, Stevenson Ridge had the honor of hosting a true American hero: Britt Slabinski, the most recent recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The Medal of Honor is “the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States.” Britt received the Medal of Honor in May of 2018 for action in Afghanistan in March of 2004. You can read his full citation here.

Britt was in Fredericksburg as part of a project he was doing with the American Battlefield Trust. To commemorate Medal of Honor Day, the Trust was using living recipients of the medal to connect with stories of soldiers who earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War. During the battle of Fredericksburg, nineteen soldiers earned Medals of Honor; five of them earned those medals at the Slaughter Pen Farm, on the battlefield’s south end.

It was there at the Slaughter Pen that Britt walked the ground and shared the story of one of the Medal of Honor recipients who fought there, George Maynard of the 13th Massachusetts. Maynard “voluntarily returned to the front under a severe fire” to help a “wounded and helpless comrade” who had “been left on the skirmish line.” Maynard retrieved the man and carried him to safety.

Britt sat in the sun room of the Riddick House to recount his story for Wideawake Films.

Britt, who had also gone back into an active combat zone to retrieve a fallen comrade, related his own story to Maynard’s experience. It is a compelling story, and I strongly urge you to take a few minutes and watch the video below in which he recounts it. The great folks at WideAwake Films produced the video, filmed at the Slaughter Pen Farm and here at Stevenson Ridge.

We’ve had to keep Britt’s appearance here under wraps until the Trust was ready to unveil its project—which we’re honored to now be able to share with you today in recognition of National Medal of Honor Day (which is today, March 25).
