This weekend, I get to help the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust show off one of its newest property acquisitions, Myer’s Hill, which sits to the south side of Route 208 across from Stevenson Ridge. A radio tower on Myer’s Hill is visible from the front yard of the Lodge. (We told you about the acquisition last fall.)
The purchase of Myer’s Hill was a fantastic coup for CVBT. The plot is just over 73 acres, which means CVBT was able to preserve a huge chunk of the battlefield in a single fell swoop. Fighting took place there on May 14, 1864, during the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, but that part of the battle often gets overlooked because it falls outside of the official boundary of Spostylvania National Battlefield.
On Sunday, as part of CVBT’s annual conference, historian John Cummings and I will cap off the weekend by offering the first-ever tour of the new property for CVBT supporters. John, who knows the property better than anyone because it’s been in his backyard for the last twenty years, has been bursting at the scenes with joy over this preservation project!
The preservation effort cost nearly half a million dollars, so CVBT is still raising money to help cover the cost, so please consider making a donation. Thanks!
